Researchers from Japan investigated a novel treatment for atherosclerosis, a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. In the study published by Open Access journal Biomolecules, the researchers look at Atherosclerosis from a molecular level.

Atherosclerosis is characterised by the narrowing of arteries caused by the build-up of cholesterol, fat, and blood cells that form plaque. The researchers targeted a protein in vascular smooth muscle cells which encourages plaque accumulation. They identified that targeting this protein could decrease the proliferation of VSMCs and plaque build-up. Because of this, they concluded that nucleic acid drugs are promising drug options to treat vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis.
