If you are looking for a beginner friendly place to snowshoe this winter, Brainard Lake is a good option. Just make sure you have good face protection from the wind. See below for trail information.

-Fees: None in winter. When the gate is open in the summer the fee is usually $12/vehicle for a day pass.
-Facilities: Pit toilets at the Brainard Lake Winter Lot.
-Parking: The Brainard Lake winter parking lot is large, but this trail popular so it fills up quickly. That being said we went on a Saturday and when we left at noon the parking lot wasn’t full.
-Trail: The snowshoe trail is 2.5 miles (5 miles round trip) with about 300’ of elevation gain. You can also make it a 5.7 mile loop by going out on the snowshoe trail and coming back on Brainard Lake Road. If you have your dog, you have to go out and back on the road which is 2.5 miles (5 miles round trip). This time of year the trail and road are covered in snow, so I would recommend having snowshoes, spikes, and good boots.
-Rules: Between November 15 and April 30, dogs are only permitted on Brainard Lake road, Lefthand Park Reservoir Road, and the Sourdough Trail.
-Pack out more than you pack in, it’s our job to keep these areas clean. Always follow good Leave No Trace principles when in the outdoors.
