Mary Gordon is the founder and president of 'Roots of Empathy' and 'Seeds of Empathy', two revolutionary educational programs based on developing empathy and promoting emotional literacy from childhood. In 2009, the Canadian Federation of Teachers awarded her the 'Public Education Advocacy Award'. She has collaborated with and advised numerous educational institutions and international bodies such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the World Health Organisation (WHO), the US government and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Mary Gordon currently serves on the board of the Ashoka Foundation, an international organization that supports social entrepreneurs around the world.
