A native of California who found his way to the Middle East via Greece after an invitation to a Grateful Dead concert, Norbert Schiller has been one of the most prolific Middle East news photographers in the last four decades. Working for, “almost everybody at some point,” his career was spent working with AFP, AP, EPA, The New York Times, Getty Images, Der Spiegel. He has covered conflict in Algeria, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kurdistan, Lebanon, Libya, the Palestinian Territories, the Persian Gulf, Somali, Sudan, and Western Sahara. His amazing and evocative images of Lebanon’s viticultural (and gastronomic) heritage illustrated both 'Wines of Lebanon', which won the Gourmand Award for the Best New World Wine Book, 2005; 'Arak and Mezze: The Taste of Lebanon', which was shortlisted for the Gourmand award for Best Food and Travel Book 2007 and 'Château Ksara: 150 years of winemaking'. His other books include 'A Million Steps: Discovering the Lebanon Mountain Trail', 'Spectacular Egypt', and 'Be Thou There: The Holy Family’s Journey in Egypt'. Norbert currently lives with his wife in Beirut, where they have been chronicling the ongoing October 2019 Revolution and, most recently Lebanon’s old rail network. In the ninth of our WINE and WAR “Lebinars”, Norbert talks to Michael Karam about his career in photography, and the challenges in documenting WINE and WAR. (Photo: Christiane Issa Nahas)
