A History of the Alaska Railroad (VHS)

Описание к видео A History of the Alaska Railroad (VHS)

Description from back of VHS case:
"Trains have played a crucial role in Alaska since before the turn of the century. In 1898 work began on the territory's first rail line, the White Pass and Yukon Railroad, which is still in operation. Other railroads sprang up to support mining and fish hauling operations, only to disappear as the industries they served collapsed. In all, there have been more than 50 railroad ventures proposed in Alaska, and nine of these eventually became operational. But none has had as broad or as lasting an impact on the 49th state as The Alaska Railroad. Construction of the railroad begun in 1914 under the authority of President Woodrow Wilson. It was completed eith years and $60 million later. The U.S. Government operated it until 1985, when it was sold for $22.3 million to the State of Alaska, which runs it today."
