In the 1970s, the town of Penal in south Trinidad became home to one of the country’s most unusual religious movements.

The group was led by Lennox Pawan, a local man who claimed the world was approaching an imminent end. He urged followers to withdraw from mainstream society and prepare for a coming disaster by stockpiling food and supplies.

Members lived communally at a remote compound and followed strict internal rules, which drew concern from nearby residents. Rumors of isolation and possible child neglect led authorities to investigate the group.
After inquiries, officials found no evidence of criminal activity or violence, and the cult was allowed to continue operating.

By the late 1970s, the movement gradually dissolved. Most followers returned to ordinary life, and the compound was abandoned.
Today, the Penal cult is remembered as a rare example of apocalyptic belief taking root in Trinidad and Tobago — strange, short-lived, and largely forgotten.
