As always, transcribed from the score to my computer having the score beside me and articulation of instruments edited to soft.

About the piece:
"Music for a Large Ensemble was commissioned by the Holland Festival and completed in December 1978. It was premiered in June 1979 by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble under the direction of Reinbert de Leeuw at the Holland Festival. The piece is a development of two of my earlier works, Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices and Organ and Music for 18 Musicians.

The piece is structured in four [five] sections, each of which is an arch from (ABCBA) beginning with shorter phrases which grow longer by augmentation and then, by diminution, return to their original length at which point there is a change of key and/or meter and the next section begins. In the middle of each section, there are somewhat longer and ornate melodic lines in the violins and clarinets. The interest in more extended melodies is continued further in my Octet (1979).
The use of four trumpets continues my interest in the human breath as the measure of musical duration, since the chords played by the trumpet are written to take one comfortable breath to perform."
