We almost decided to not even launch this day because it was dumping rain at the launch in the pre dawn hours. Luckily, there was a brief gap in the weather so we quickly unloaded the yaks and dashed out to the grounds. Live opelu are incredibly hard to catch this time of year because they are breeding and under constant attack by pelagic predators, so I was super stoked to catch one bait right at sunrise. After an hour or so with my single live opelu out on the line,

I finally found some fish and managed to hook a shibi ahi (yellowfin tuna). It seemed like that would be all the action for the day because I was unlikely to find more live bait, so I threw a dead opelu out and started heading in. Not long after, I came across a huge bait ball too tempting to pass up, so I dropped my sabiki rig through the pile and was actually able to hook another opelu.

Soon after sending out the fresh live bait, the fish of a lifetime decided to stop by for a bite...
