In 1998, Tom Wentzel was working in Zeeland, Michigan, as a volunteer firefighter when he was electrocuted on the scene of an out-of-control fire. He recovered from the incident and everything seemed fine until a few years later, when the bones in his hands and feet began to break. His left foot was the most serious and after 17 surgeries, Tom chose to amputate his foot.
