As a boss, promote work-life balance by using these five strategies to encourage non-working vacations. Visit https://joelinspirationalspeaker.com to hire Joel to present a speech or training at your workplace on this topic: “Unplug, Disengage, Disconnect: How to Create Balance in Your Work and Your Life.”
Supervisors play a major role in encouraging non-working vacations. They can foster a culture of truly taking a break by actively discouraging working during vacations.
How can both the supervisor and the employee work to make the vacation a fully energizing experience, allowing the employee to fully decompress and recharge?
• Urge employees to take all their vacation days.
• Don’t permit interruptions during vacations.
• Identify backup team members who can provide support rather than having people on vacation be available on-call.
• Don’t ask employees to change the dates of an already-booked vacation. Honor them.
• Provide time to catch up after a vacation.
You can also post a sign in the office telling employees not to work or engage in any work-related communications while on a vacation.
Why is this so important?
Sometimes employees feel so overwhelmed about the amount of work they’ll have when they come back from vacation that they do a little of it each day. They fear being confronted with an intensified workload. In other words, it’s like they’re being punished for going on vacation, and they’re trying to mitigate that punishment. Or, they dwell on the amount of work they’ll have even if they’re not actively working on vacation, which makes them feel stressed.
Thus, every manager who wants to encourage work-life balance should work to ensure that employees leave work behind during vacations.
Planning for the employee’s return
When an employee returns to work, all she should have to do that day is check her email and start getting caught up. Don’t pack the day with meetings and throw her into an intensified workload. Instead, allow time to catch up on projects. The point of contact who took over as the support person should continue in that role for the rest of the week, or at least for a few days. That will give returning employees permission to truly unplug during their vacation rather than stressing about work.
