In 1935 the BSA recognized older scouts as Explorers within a patrol of a troop. This designation quickly expanded into a program that lasts even today. Explorers originally was a part of a scout troop with senior scouts until the late 40s. This expanded After World War II into Explorer crews (Exploring) with the adoption of Sea Scouts and Air Scouts. By the 60s the Explorer program was a stand-alone part of the BSA. By the 70s Explorers was a co-ed program for all young people. In the 90s Explorers moved into the "Learning for Life" program. Today thousands of Explorers enjoy exposure to career opportunities across a wide spectrum.

1935 Senior Scouts in a troop were officially called Explores Crew (patrols). 1949 The BSA recognized Explorers as a Scouting division of its own including Air and Sea Scouts.
• Air Scouts (squadrons) were established in 1941-1948, Air Explorers 1949-1965. Disbanded in 1985. Only Aviation Career Explorers exist today.
• Sea Scouts (Ships) were established in 1912-1949. In 1949 Sea Scouts became Sea Explorers. In 1998 Sea Explorers switched back to Sea Scouts under the Venturing Division. 2016 Sea Scouts became a full-fledged program on its own. 1959 Exploring Program was set up as a separate program of the BSA. 1969 The Exploring program expanded into trades, business, and professional careers. 1971 Young women signed up for the now co-ed Explorers. 1981 Explorers started to specialize in Law Enforcement, Fire & Rescue, and healthcare. 1991 Learning for Life was introduced to support career paths in Explorers. 2013 Learning for Lafe became its own program as a stand-alone affiliate of the BSA.
