But it's odd that a company can have such market penetration in the highest populated country in the world and yet it makes very little noise to the west. Tencent is as important in China as having a smartphone is just about anywhere. Tencent is worth more than Facebook, makes more digital transactions than Mastercard, and is the largest gaming company in the world. That’s not enough? How about one of the biggest film producers in China? Not to mention one of the biggest music distributors as well. If it’s done on a smartphone, Tencent’s had its hands all over it.
On one side, it’s a blessing. Tencent makes just about every aspect of Chinese life more enjoyable. You can call a friend, make dinner plans, pay for dinner, look up a movie, buy tickets to the movie AND call a taxi all from WeChat. You can make new friends and even find the love of your life at your fingertips.
But should you choose to use those fingertips to, say, be critical of the government, that will not end well for you. Tencent is legally obligated to handover all your digital information to the government whenever requested. They can even see your deleted texts. How much convenience are you willing to give up for your privacy?”
