This black and white film is one of a 1950-1960 television series Industry on Parade, produced by the National Association of Manufacturers. It contains a single segment about jobs performed during the night. A man sits down in his 1950s living room to watch a flickering TV screen (:37-1:03). New York City’s lit buildings at night are shown. Neon signs advertise Kinsey blended whiskey and Ruppert beer. A blinking neon sign says “Eat in Your Car” at Richard’s Drive-In. Patrons dine at a restaurant. The waitress takes an order (1:04-1:45). A line of uniformed bell hops and women in plain dresses walk to start their night shifts at a hotel. A housekeeper wipes out a table of ash trays. Clean silverware is sorted (1:46-2:24). The type is set at a newspaper plant to print the news overnight. The impression for that page is taken and attached to the printing machine. The pages are rapidly printed (2:25-3:10). Milk is filled into glass bottles. A worker takes them off the conveyer and adds them to milk crates moving on a conveyer. A bread factory shows dough dropping onto a conveyer. Two workers load the pans of dough into ovens. The finished loafs move on the conveyer, where they are panned. A train with refrigerated and food cars is unloaded and reloaded into transportation trucks. A Grand Union truck pulls out (3:11-6:20). The man turns off his TV. He removes his robe from over his pajamas and climbs into bed. He sets his table alarm clock and turns off the bedside lamp (6:21-6:55). A janitor pours cleaning solution into a bucket and mops the floor. The wall behind him holds multiple time cards. A night watchman patrols the factory floor (6:56-7:30). An office is completely moved to a new location during the night and recreated the same as at the last location, down to the portable upright typewriters and adding machines (7:31-8:24). A line of women work the large switchboards, marked Miami and New York (8:25-8:40). A patient on a gurney is wheeled out of the Surgery operating room and into his room. The nurse wears a face mask. The IV bottle is shifted over, followed by the patient into his bed. The nurse removes the backboard. A second IV bottle is added. A worker checks vats of intravenous fluids. He adds ingredients that swirl around. A female chemist uses an eyedropper to add liquids to a beaker, which is put over a flame to remove pyrogens. The glass IV bottles are mechanically washed, rinsed, and sterilized in an autoclave before being filled. A sample is examined (8:41-10:48). Molten steel is shown sparking and flowing at a steel mill, lighting up the dark. Flames and smoke are released out of stacks at a petroleum refinery. A wall of dials and knobs are shown inside an electric power plant (10:49-12:08). The alarm goes off at 6:57. The man puts on his robe and gets his paper and milk bottle from the front porch (12:09-13:05).
