God's people arrived at Mount Sinai. They have entered the 'wilderness church (Act 7:38)' that Stephen talked about, the 'process of training and discipline' after leaving the land of the world's riches, Egypt, with God's grace and power. God guided the God’s people into the wilderness, even though the way through the Philistines' was closer (Exo 13:17,18). This was because God had 'rules and laws' to teach the people on Mount Sinai. They must know about the God who called them. From now on we need to listen carefully. It is ‘wicked’ if we do not care about ‘God’s want’ and just claim and demand ‘our want’.
The Israelites were “Egyptian citizens” born, raised, and educated in Egypt while living according to the Egyptian customs, and the name 'Israelites' was just a name they had for a long time, about 400 years. The Israelites only knew the God that was delivered by word from their ancestors and had no other choice but to make a calf idol and call it 'god'. Therefore, they needed to know who God is according to what God says, not the Egyptian gods they pictured. By knowing who God is, they can serve God according to God's way and God's will. If they served God in their own ways, God would also become an 'idol'.
So God gave the Ten Commandments and first said, 'Do not serve other gods'. This means that the God they knew so far was another god. The gods they knew in Egypt were gods that existed to help them, but the God who appeared to them revealed that he was the “God of the Covenant” who called the Israelites for God's covenant. The people who have lived until now for themselves, for their wants, have now entered into God through the Word of God. Anyone who lives according to the words that God commanded will live and if who he strays from the words God commanded will die.
The manna given by God is the 'food of heaven' and the 'daily food' (Exo 16:4/ Mat 6:11), the 'food of life' to be eaten every day (Deu 8:3/ Psa 1:2/ Mat 4:4). We must remember that none of God's people who died in the wilderness died of starvation, but they died because of their 'resentment', 'complaints', and 'unfaithfulness'. In the wilderness, nothing except manna should be expected (Deu 8:3/Mat 4:4). This is because the wilderness was not a place to stay, but a place to pass. God also gave quails in the wilderness (Exo 16:13-21), but it was the food they gained after their complaints due to their unfaithfulness. Even if they received what they asked for, we can see God's wrath coming (Num Ch. 11). In addition, the essential water in the wilderness came from the rock, which is the representation of Jesus Christ (1Co 10:4) and the living water will also be a representation of Jesus Christ (Joh 7:38). Now it has been three months since the Israelites left Egypt and came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped there(Exo 19:1,2).
