STORYLINE:
The main winners of "El Gordo" or "the fat one", Spain's annual Christmas lottery celebrated on Sunday outside the office that sold the winning ticket.

They opened a bottle of wine and posed for photos in Logroño, near Bilbao in northern Spain.

El Gordo is said to be the world’s largest lottery based on the total prize money involved even though other lotteries have larger single prizes.

This year's lottery spread riches totalling 2.7 billion euros (around 2.8 billion US dollars), much of it in small winnings.

The top prize, worth 400,000 euros (roughly 417,000 US dollars) was distributed among several ticket holders with the number 72480.

The people of Spain were glued to their screens on Sunday as the annual Christmas lottery draw was broadcast from the Royal Opera House in Madrid.

In the weeks leading up to the draw, queues form outside lottery offices, especially those with a history of having sold prize-winning tickets in the past.

Multiple tickets with the same number can be sold to different groups in Spain’s Christmas lottery, and full tickets are divisible into 10 parts.

Buying and sharing these parts, known in Spanish as “décimos” or tenths, in the run-up to Christmas is a popular tradition among families, friends, and co-workers and in bars, sports and social clubs.
