Campaign against Daesh
US Secretary of Defense Ash Carter has announced Washington will step up its campaign against Daesh, also known as ISIS. There’ll be more air strikes and the possible use of ground forces. The White House says the US and Saudi Arabia have talked about increasing support to rebels fighting the Syrian government. The Obama administration has so far not used ground forces to fight Daesh in Syria. But it does have 3,500 soldiers to ‘train and advise’ security forces in Iraq.

UN says 13.5M people need aid
The UN says 13 and a half million people in Syria need aid. It says more than 4 million people have had to leave the country. At least 6.5 million others have been displaced internally. Earlier this week, the UN announced that the number of people who have crossed into Europe this year had exceeded 700 thousand. More than half of them are Syrians. At least 250-thousand people have died in Syria’s nearly five year long war.

Refugee to be flown from Nauru
A Somali refugee will be sent from Nauru to Australia for a second time. Canberra flew Abyan there two weeks ago for an abortion. But government officials say she changed her mind. She says they refused to give her an interpreter or counselling. She says she was raped in July and first requested an abortion two months ago. Abyan lives in Nauru because when she fled Somalia for Australia she was sent to a detention centre there. Canberra pays Nauru to run the camp. Abyan was granted refugee status and no longer lives in the detention centre.

FIFA names candidates for president
FIFA has named its seven candidates for presidency. One of the nominees is UEFA president Michel Platini. He’s currently on a 90-day suspension from the sport because of a payment he received from FIFA president Sepp Blatter who was also suspended. Experts previously saw Platini as the most likely successor to Blatter as FIFA president. The organisation will decide whether Platini's candidacy will move forward.
