A middle is when a sports bettor places a bet on both sides of a line in an attempt to win both bets. In the example Matt gives- let's say the Sixers are -3.5 against the Celtics and you bet them at that number. Then, a couple hours pass, and you notice that the Celtics are now +6.5 as opposed to 3.5. Betting the Celtics at that number, so you would now have bet both sides of the spread, would be an example of a middle.

If the Sixers win by either 4, 5, or 6, then you would have won both of your bets. But, in any other scenario you would still have won at least one of your bets. This is the concept of middling and why it is an important concept to understand to make money betting on sports.

Another example of middling wouldn't involve letting time pass, but instead betting both sides of the line on two different sportsbooks at the same time. In the same Sixers vs Celtics example, let's say the Sixers are -3.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook and the Celtics are +4.5 on FanDuel Sportsbook. If you bet both of those numbers and the Sixers win by exactly 4 then you would again have won both your bets. But, either way no matter what happens you would still win at least one.
