Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said he would not be “threatened or blackmailed” by the European Union as he arrived for an informal leaders’ retreat on Thursday.

When asked about improving Europe’s competitiveness, Orban laid out three priorities: “First, stop the war. War is bad for business. Look for peace. Second, don’t send your money to somebody else if you need it for your competitiveness. So don’t send the money to Ukraine. Third one, reduce and cut back as much as you can the energy price. That’s so simple.”

Orban has repeatedly criticized EU support for Ukraine and argued that prolonged conflict harms Europe’s economy. He has also accused Brussels and Kyiv of attempting to influence Hungary’s upcoming elections — claims the EU has dismissed.

Recent media reports suggested the bloc had considered potential alternatives to advance Ukraine’s EU accession despite Hungary’s objections. Brussels has rejected allegations of election interference, calling them unfounded.
