Archbishop Kanishka Raffel grew up Buddhist in a Sri Lankan family. At 21, he was deeply committed to Buddhism: meditating, reading religious texts, seeking total control through the Eightfold Path. Then a friend said something that changed everything: "Being a Christian meant I lost control of my life to Jesus Christ."

That statement was provocative. Offensive, even. How could you lose control to someone who died 2,000 years ago?

Weeks later, unable to sleep on a humid Sydney night, Kanishka picked up John's Gospel, thinking it would put him to sleep. Instead, he read it three times that night. By 1 AM, he was rummaging through his desk looking for a Gideons Bible that had a prayer in it on how to become a Christian.
