Purpose: The primary goal is to prevent naming collisions. When multiple XML vocabularies are used within a single document, elements or attributes with the same local name (e.g., title) could originate from different sources and have different meanings. Namespaces distinguish these, ensuring correct interpretation by applications.
Declaration: Namespaces are declared using the xmlns attribute within an element. This declaration can be:
Explicit: A prefix is associated with the namespace URI using xmlns:prefix="URI". This prefix is then used to qualify elements and attributes belonging to that namespace (e.g., bk:book).
Default: A default namespace is declared for the current element and its descendants using xmlns="URI". Elements within the scope of this declaration that do not have a prefix are considered to belong to this default namespace.
Identification: Namespaces are identified by a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier), which can be a URL or URN. The URI serves as a unique identifier for the namespace and does not necessarily need to point to an actual resource on the internet. Its purpose is solely to provide a globally unique name for the namespace.
