It’s Day 13 of my 22-Day Printmaking Challenge, and I think the 13 is fitting for today. 🐍

I started off with great intentions and in pretty great spirits with this one. I absolutely love this design — I had a great time sketching it up and I felt super excited to get it on the block and get carving. But things seemed to unravel pretty quickly once I got going.

I hit so many road blocks today, and I even ended up re-carving a large portion of this one after starting it on another block and checking the footage. I tested out a few new filming setups today and I was unhappy with how everything was looking — and even now with this final product I’m still pretty bummed. To top it all off, I struggled for HOURS to find the right music for the video, which sent me into a full-blown spiral.

In this content-driven world I’ve created for myself, it isn’t enough to just make art that I love. I also have to find ways to share it that I’m proud of. And that just didn’t happen today. After a good cry and a quick pity party, I decided to share this one and these details mostly as a reminder to myself that sometimes it just won’t all line up, and that’s ok too.

Lessons were learned, and I’ll be able to avoid these same mistakes in the future. But for now, here is a slightly blurry, slightly shaky video of a process for a print I really love - about fear, change, vulnerability, and bravery.
