India is set to script defence manufacturing history as Rafale fighter jets will be produced outside France for the first time. Following the Defence Acquisition Council’s Acceptance of Necessity for 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed that 40 to 50 percent localisation will be achieved under the Make in India programme. The project will operate through a government-to-government agreement with no intermediaries and full transparency. A key highlight is the integration of Indian weapons and systems onto the platform, strengthening strategic autonomy. Rafale Marines are expected to begin arriving in 2028, followed by Indian Air Force variants within three and a half years. Alongside MRFA, approvals for combat missiles and high-altitude pseudo-satellites aim to boost air dominance, deep-strike capability, surveillance and deterrence. The move marks a significant leap in India’s defence industrial capacity.
