Now you may be asking, what’s a zero??

Zeros are my chart’s equivalent to the long-reigning number 1 songs on the UK and US charts. The purpose is to capture the song of the moment. A song becomes a zero if it reaches number 1 during a special "zero week." This week can happen when one or more of these conditions are met:
• When the previous zero leaves the eligibility zone,
• During the week ending before or on Christmas
• If a song that hasn't been a zero before spends two weeks at number 1.

The "zone of eligibility" for zeros depends on how many plays a song gets. If the number 1 song has fewer than 15 plays, the zone is the top 8. For songs with 15 to 20 plays, the zone becomes the top 5. And if a song gets over 20 plays, the zone is reduced to the top 3. If a song sets a new all-time weekly play-count record, it automatically becomes a zero. Songs that fall out of this zone but stay within the top 10 still have the chance to return to zero if they fall back into this zone.

The idea of zeros dates back to the beginning of the chart, where the song that was number 1 at that time was declared the first zero. This created a chain of zeros as new songs reach number 1 during zero weeks.

Aug 2019- Introduced rule. Follows Top 10 eligibility zone.
Jan 2020- Switched to Top 8 eligibility zone.
Jan 2021- Switched to Top 5 eligibility zone.
Jan 2022- Added 2 weeks at number 1 possibility.
Jan 2023- Added flexible eligibility zone and record-break rule.
