After a run of creating some of the most effective supernatural horror to date (Suspiria, Inferno), Dario Argento returns to his early giallo roots in this landmark film of the genre.

Tenebrae tells the story of an author caught up in a string of murders, all relating back to him and his latest book, Tenebrae. It takes many of its themes and scene beats from Argento's own life and career, creating an interesting almost meta retrospective on his own filmography.

From the leather gloves to the P.O.V shots, the film is absolute classic giallo, ticking nearly every box of the genre's conventions. You'd be hard pressed to find a better film that defines the genre, and if you were wanting to get into the fantastical world of giallo cinema this ain't a bad start.

Like most Argento films, the soundtrack is stunning. Working with three of the members of the then disbanded Goblin, it's almost John Carpenter-esque, with roaring synths and screeching electric guitars, played rather boldly over some of the movies intensest scenes. Almost for the sound track alone the movie is worth a watch.
