BMW has officially taken the wraps off its largest and most luxurious wagon ever - the all-new, all-electric i5 Touring. As the electric counterpart to the latest 5 Series, this EV estate is a big deal, setting new benchmarks for space, comfort, and performance in BMW's lineup.

The i5 Touring casts an imposing figure, stretching over 16.6 feet in length with a nearly 10-foot wheelbase. Those gargantuan proportions translate directly into palatial passenger accommodations, with absolutely immense rear legroom and shoulder room. Even with bodies aboard, there's still a generous 570 liters (20 cubic feet) of cargo space that expands to 1,700 liters (60 cu ft) with the rear seats folded.

Powering this behemoth is a choice of two electric powertrains. The base i5 eDrive40 uses a single 340-horsepower motor on the rear axle, good for a 6.1-second sprint to 60 mph. But the real star is the dual-motor i5 M60 xDrive, laying down 601 hp and 720 lb-ft to all four wheels. That's enough for eye-watering 3.9-second launches to 60, along with a 230-mph top speed - numbers that would embarrass BMW's old M5 Touring super-wagon.

Despite their disparate performance capabilities, both models use the same 81.2-kWh battery pack. The more frugal eDrive40 can travel up to 350 miles on a single charge, while even the M60 still manages an estimated 315-mile range in more restrained driving. Level 2 11-kW charging is standard, with up to 22-kW available as an option, and DC fast charging peaks at 205 kW.

As you'd expect, the i5 Touring gets BMW's latest tech treatments inside, including the curved display housing the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The iDrive 8.5 operating system brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus cloud-based navigation and streaming video functionality. The loaded M60 benefits from an M Sport suspension, upgraded brakes, and rear-axle steering for sharper dynamics.

All of this cutting-edge luxury wagon goodness doesn't come cheap, however. Pricing in Germany starts at €72,200 ($76,500) for the eDrive40, while the M60 xDrive commands a staggering €101,500 ($107,500) before options. Those eye-watering MSRPs put the i5 Touring at the highest end of the premium EV wagon market.

But for well-heeled buyers who value space, comfort, and performance above all else, BMW's biggest battery-powered hauler could be the ultimate electric family wagon. With concept car dimensions and ridiculous straight-line pace in range-topping M60 form, the 2024 i5 Touring is Munich's premium EV moonshot.
