Box Hill Challenge - Its Gonna Hurt!

The iconic Box Hill climb isn't particularly long but it is a toughie!



Since being made famous in the 2012 Olympic cycling road race, Box Hill, Surrey has become one of the UK's most famous cycling climbs.

Its not particularly long at 2.5 kms but with an average gradient at around 5% and steeper bits at 7% it is a tough little ride. Every year Box Hill features in the Prudential London 100 cycle ride and thousands of cyclists take it on.

Sadly, I have not managed to get a place in the London 100 but I have taken on Box Hill. In this film I cycle up for the first ever time and then return three months later when I have gained a little fitness, lost a little weight and swapped over to a lighter, faster bike.

Many people around the world will know Box Hill after doing a virtual ride up it on Zwift but Zwift makes it appear that the climb is located within central London. This is only for the benefit of the riders in the game. The real Box Hill is about 13 miles from London near the town of Dorking in Surrey.

On my second set of rides I went back to the Surrey Hills and went all out to see if I was able to beat my previous time and if I was able to set a new PR on Strava.
