In an attempt to minimize the military pilot shortage, I was selected to be part of a Small Group Tryout (SGTO) that substituted the traditional IFT with civilian flight training. This extended IFT deemed “Initial Pilot Training” (IPT) took place in Georgetown, Texas over 6 months. As part of the first ever IPT class, I received my PPL, Instrument Rating, & Multi Engine Rating before returning to Columbus AFB for a shortened UPT syllabus, flying the T6!
