This video is part of videos & images for a road construction project that I did in Maryland high way, Liberia-west Africa, these images were taken before and after the project for documentary purposes.
The fact is, it was a disaster, I was told that there are many people stuck in muddy places for weeks before they were able to cross it, and others said there are many women who give birth on that highway.
so sad to hear that, I did everything in my power to make this road stand strong for many raining seasons.
the customer paid for a certain quantity and quality, but I went the extra mile with my filling of rocks and quality of work just to make sure people do not suffer on this road soon or at least before asphalt pavement.
I remember the consultant always telling me that I will lose in this project! but my attention was the people and good access road in perfect condition not to make money as everyone do. Yes for sure I lost a lot of money.
I took the project for almost $6 millions but the cost was 6.5 million,
Sad for me too.

On other hand;
Many people feel that the gravel road is so easy! No, it is not!
Gravel road building is also hard to deal with, it has its special specification, designed by an engineer, survey, geology team, and supervised by consultants.
When you mention a gravel or dirt road! it doesn't mean you should load any dirt or gravel beside the road! NO! it's a special place we remove that dirt (called laterite) to coat it on the surface of the road on levels (20cm each level) or more.
We carry some gravel from different hills to the laboratory for a test, after clearing the trees, then remove the black soil from the surface until it reaches the gravel layer that we need. if the quantity of gravel (stones must be mix with the dirt) didn't reach the specification! we look for a different area or areas until we find the real gravel that suits the specifications.
