The 10th of October 732 AD saw one of the iconic battles of medieval history take place on the road between Poitiers and Tours.

An Umayyad army has crossed the Pyrenees from newly-conquered Muslim Spain, their aim to punish the Duke of Aquitaine and perhaps extend their control into the heart of Christian Frankish territory.

With an immediate aim of sacking the rich city of Tours, Umayyad commander Abdul al-Rahman moves slowly north. However, blocking the Umayyad army's route to Tours are the dogged men of Charles Martel - Mayor of the Palace and de facto ruler of the Franks.

The Battle of Tours is also known as the Battle of Poitiers and in Muslim sources as the Battle of the Highway of the Martyrs.
