Dhaka students protest over local election date

(15 Jan 2020) Hundreds of students from Dhaka University have protested over the date of a local city corporation election on Wednesday.  
The protesters demanded that it be changed because it falls on the same day as Saraswati Puja, a Hindu festival.
Students clashed with police, breaking a barricade and blocking traffic on some streets near Dhaka University.
Protests were continuing a day after the High Court rejected a petition seeking a rescheduling of Dhaka south and north city corporation elections, scheduled for January 30.
Hindus are a minority in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, making up little more than 8% of the population, according to the 2011 census report by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics.
