Today I talk to Ian Haynes about his work as an archaeologist and how he first became interested in the past - and especially the Roman and ancient world. Ian and I did our doctorates together at Oxford back in the nineties, both of us working on different aspects of the Roman Army. I was an ancient historian by training, while his first degree was in archaeology, which meant that we came at the subject from different perspectives. I know I benefitted a lot then - and many times since - from bouncing ideas around with him.

Ian has done a lot, so we only touch on his work a little and I hope to get him back on the Channel to tell us in more detail about some of his recent projects, for instance Rome Transformed, which has brought together a wide range of specialists to look at the western part of the Caelian Hill in Rome over a long period covering the ancient and early medieval.
