HOW TO STOP YOUR DOG FROM RUNNING OUT THE DOOR

Does your dog try to bolt out the door every time you get your keys or your dog’s leash? If so, I can’t even begin to tell you just how important it is to teach your dog to “wait” before going out the door!

The wait command is soooo useful in training patience, self-control and all-around obedience!

Some practical uses for the “wait” command include teaching your dog to wait for his food, wait for you to take off his leash, open his crate, go out the door, and many more useful instances!

In this video, I show you how to teach a “Wait” out the door. Here’s how you do it:

1. Have your pup either seated or lying down to start off, sitting calmly and focused on you near the door.

2. Tell him to “wait” and use the wait hand signal of holding a #1 (☝️)with your finger while you go to open the door. It’s SO important here that your dog maintains his focus on YOU and is not locked in on the door waiting for his chance to run outside.

3. If your dog gets up or attempts to go out the door, say “uh-uh”, close the door, and return to step one. In the beginning, you will most likely have to do this many, many times in just one sitting until your dog begins to understand what you’re asking of him!!

4. After your dog has patiently waited and stayed seated while you open the door completely and walk outside, say “Ok” and redirect him to “Sit” immediately once he gets outside, focused on you once again. “Ok” is the release word and communicates to your pup that it is okay for him to stop waiting and come outside with you. This teaches your dog that he doesn’t have approval to come outside until you have released him from the “wait”!

5. Be sure to praise him immediately once he sits with your clicker word “Yes”, “Good”, etc. and give him a treat.

Pro Tip: As your dog gets better and better with “Wait,” lengthen the amount of time between him sitting and saying, “Ok” so you can continue to strengthen and prolong his focus.
