鐘の部分は水が氷に変化する際に体積が増える「凍結膨張」を利用しています。
凍結膨張では9％ほど体積が膨張しその際に生じる凍結膨張圧力は約200MPa（理論上は水深約20,000mでの水圧）に達するとされています。地球で一番深いマリアナ海峡の海底でも10,911m（水圧は約108.6MPa）です。
