The History of Georgia

During Antiquity, the area of Georgia was split amongst small kingdoms. These kingdoms united to form the Kingdom of Georgia in 1008. The new kingdom quickly began to flourish, and started expanding against its neighbours

By the end of the 12th Century, it had reached a golden age. However, it was devastated by Mongol and Timurid invasions during the following two centuries, and never fully recovered. The weakened kingdom collapsed in the 1460s, and spent much of the rest of its history in this shattered state.

The area was conquered by Imperial Russia during the first half of the 19th Century, and thereafter became a Soviet Republic in 1921. The country finally regained independence in 1991.
