"Nectaris", known in the West as "Military Madness", is a turn-based strategy game developed and published by Hudson Soft in 1989 for the PC Engine.
It is very reminiscent of the Advance Wars saga, because, just like in those brilliant titles, the player commands more and more kinds of units, each one with unique weaknesses and strengths, like in a larger-scale version of rock, paper, scissors.
In Nectaris, too, we’ll find a system of bonuses and penalties depending on the type of terrain our units are on, and the presence of cities, factories or other buildings to capture.
The title also features a multiplayer mode, a handy password system and an in-game manual, that you can consult to get familiar with the game’s most complex mechanics.
Except for the larger maps’ scrolling, which is too slow and unpleasantly stops the music, Nectaris is a basically flawless title, and it’s super addicting.
Over the years, Nectaris received a couple of sequels, a port on the Game Boy, and finally an enhanced remake for WiiWare, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and Iphone called "Military Madness: Nectaris".
Nowadays, you can find the original game on Nintendo Virtual Console and on the PC Engine/Turbografx Mini, in which it's included both in its western and japanese version.
