Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival returned to The Civic for the first time since 2019. The 2022 opening night film was Muru by writer and returning director Tearepa Kahi (Poi E: The Story of Our Song – NZIFF 2016, Herbs: Songs of Freedom – NZIFF 2019), a film that plunges the audience into one of the most charged episodes of Aotearoa’s history: the Tūhoe raids of 15 Oct 2007.

We went along to opening night and spoke with Tearepa Kahi and a few cast members to find out what it means to them to be involved in such a significant work and for it to have its world premiere screening at The Civic.
