On May 1, answering a question about the appropriateness of the “denazification” of Ukraine, where the president is an ethnic Jew Vladimir Zelensky, he said: “I could be wrong, but Hitler also had Jewish blood. The wise Jewish people say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually Jews. “The family has its black sheep,” as we say.” This statement provoked a reaction from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, where the Russian ambassador was summoned for an explanatory conversation.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said that Lavrov's words are "unforgivable, outrageous and a gross, dense mistake." The words of the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry were also condemned by other alleged politicians and public organizations, including the chairman of the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, Dani Dayan.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Monday called Lavrov's words a "lie" that is intended to place responsibility for the extermination of Jews during World War II on themselves.

Bennett also called for an immediate end to the use of Holocaust references for political purposes.
