USS Stewart (DD-224), a Clemson-class destroyer of the United States Navy, earned the nickname "The Ghost of the Pacific" due to her remarkable and unusual fate during World War II. Commissioned in 1920, Stewart served in the Asiatic Fleet until she was severely damaged during the Battle of Badung Strait in early 1942. Scuttled in a drydock at Surabaya to prevent capture, she was raised by the Japanese in 1943, repaired, and reclassified as Patrol Boat No. 102. Used for escort and patrol duties under Japanese control, she was rediscovered by U.S. forces at the end of the war. She was recommissioned into the US Navy in late 1945, and after finding her way back to the US, was sunk as a target ship off the coast of California. Stewart received two battle stars for her World War II service.
