What is an infinitive?

An infinitive is a base form of a verb. Though it is formed out of a verb, it doesn't work as a verb. It is one of three verbals (non-finite verbs) we have in English.

How does it look?

It is formed using "to + V1". Some infinitives - To play, to sing, to cook, to help etc.

What does it do in a sentence?


It works as the following in a sentence:

1. Noun
2. Adjective
3. Adverb

When it works as a noun in a sentence, it acts as the following:

1. The subject of the sentence
2. The object of the sentence
3 Subject complement

Examples of infinitives working as nouns

1. (To run) daily keeps you fit.

2. (To see) her happy keeps me happy.

3. Everybody likes (to dance).

4. I want (to eat).

5. My job is (to teach) students.

Examples of infinitives working as adjectives

6. He is the guy (to meet) tomorrow.

7. I need a place (to live).

8. She was very happy (to see) me.

9. The coffee is too hot (to drink).

Examples of infinitives working as adverbs

10. He called me (to borrow) some money.

11. I went there (to help).
