On The Scene: The Philippines on Saturday said decried China’s recent “illegal and dangerous maneuvers” in the West Philippine Sea after the Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) blocked Philippine personnel from collecting sand samples from Sandy Cay, a feature that falls within the Southeast Asian country’s territorial waters. CCG ships and a helicopter employed illegal and dangerous maneuvers as they tried to block BRP Datu Pagbuaya and BRP Datu Bankaw while these Philippine vessels were en route to Sandy Cays for a marine scientific survey and sand sampling on January 24, 2025, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) earlier said. The PCG vessels were only able to prevent a collision thanks to their seamanship skills, Tarriela said.
