Father Anthony Gramlich, MIC, invites us to contemplate a profound and often overlooked dimension of the Nativity: the possibility that the shepherds encountered not merely an infant, but a visible manifestation of divine glory. The Gospels tell us they were filled with awe, and awe is never born from the ordinary. Something extraordinary drew them into that dark cave in Bethlehem.

Scripture proclaims that Christ is “the true light, which enlightens everyone” (Jn 1:9; NABRE). Father Anthony reflects on the mystery that this Light did not wait until Mount Tabor to shine. The Transfiguration revealed Christ’s glory openly, yet who can say that divine radiance was absent from the crib? The shepherds needed no lamp, no torch, no fire. They had the Light Himself. In the deepest poverty and obscurity, heaven illuminated the earth.

This meditation draws us deeper into the realism of the Incarnation. God did not disguise His divinity as He took on flesh; He revealed it through humility. In a cold, dark cave, surrounded by silence and animals, the glory of God dwelt bodily. The shepherds saw something with their eyes, but even more, God awakened something within their hearts. The same Holy Spirit who overshadowed Mary opened their souls to recognize the Messiah.

Father Anthony reminds us that Christmas is not sentimental nostalgia. It is a revelation. Christ enters the darkness of the world—and of the human heart—not as a distant idea, but as a living Light. The shepherds teach us how to respond: to go, to see, to adore, and to proclaim. The Child who glowed in the cave still shines today for those willing to seek Him.
