Today, we are ecstatic to present another fine and one-of-a-kind Bigsby instrument here at Retrofret: a 1958 Bigsby Pedal Steel played alongside a 1931 C.F. Martin OM-18 owned by Mr. Conway Twitty. We welcome back two of our dear friends, ‪@raphaelmcgregor1‬ and ‪@grantgordy‬ to take these two exceptional instruments for a spin.

This is one of the most elaborate and coolest original Bigsby instruments we have seen, a triple-eight pedal steel from the late 1950s with a total of eight pedals. It was originally shipped in June 1958 to a customer in Canada who must have proved one of Bigsby's most picky clients, as he returned the instrument not once but twice for extensive revisions! That player was Gord Affeldt of Waterloo, Ontario, who had a local career as a pedal steel artist, appearing with Johnny Siska and the Silver Bar Ranch on CKCO TV in the 1950s as well as a show called the Sunset Riders. In the early 1960s Affeldt was one of the few proficient pedal steelers in the Ontario region and frequently appeared with both Canadian and touring acts from the US. He retired the instrument in the 1970s and it has sat unused "under the bed" for many decades now, recently receiving a tune-up from Bigsby maven Todd Clinesmith.

This beautiful original Martin OM-18 has accrued a story since its birth in Nazareth Pa. in late 1931. Surviving beautifully through the decades, it spent some in the possession of Country legend Conway Twitty. It was worked on (for Twitty) in the '70s by well known luthier Don Teeter, documented by a letter in the case dated to January 1975 advising on care and string gauges. In 2003 the guitar was re-worked at Gruhn's in Nashville, restored to its original state with what OM guru Eric Schoenberg described as "forgery grade" bridge and bridge plate. It has had some travels since, appearing on several well known vintage websites. We can say with the guitar in hand is this is simply one of the best sounding OM-18's we have heard; powerful yet sweet and authoritative when pushed.
