The park takes its name from the adjoining building erected at the end of the sixteenth century and is the largest of the public gardens within the city walls. The surface is about 4 hectares. Designed in 1780 by the Ferrara architect Luigi Bertelli for the Marquis Camillo Bevilacqua, this important garden was remembered for the numerous sculptures that adorned it and for the great variety of citrus and flowering plants that perfumed its magnificent paths.

In the mid-nineteenth century the Counts Massari acquired the building by modifying the whole complex as an English park. The design of the flower beds is that of the nineteenth century and many trees are more than centuries old: in addition to the two Cedars of Lebanon at the entrance, there are some yews, an imposing ginkgo and the gigantic oaks at the entrance to Corso Ercole I d'Este. Since 1936 it has been owned by the Municipality of Ferrara, which has turned it into a public park.
