There are multiple stories about his birth but the most popular one involved his mother Coatlicue and a bunch of feathers. The mythology states that one day, Coatlicue was ritually sweeping in Coatepec mountain. As she worked, a ball of white feathers floated down to her, so she took it and stowed it by her breast, under the folds of her skirt. When Coatlicue went to examine it later, the ball of feathers had disappeared but she found she was pregnant.

This ball of feathers was believed to be that of a hummingbird and Huitzilopochtli was conceived. This enraged his 400 siblings who plotted to kill Coatlicue. When they arrived to do the deed, Huitzilopochtli emerged from the womb fully armoured and killed almost all his brothers and his only sister making them the moon and stars.

This bloodthirst is said to have made him demand human #sacrifice from his devotees as well. #shorts
