On October 27th, 2024, at approximately 7:45 PM, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was conducting a night hunting patrol in Tates Hell Wildlife Management Area, Franklin County, Florida, in full uniform and a marked patrol vehicle.
The officer observed a small vehicle without a visible tag light and with multiple tree limbs stacked on the roof. Upon initiating a traffic stop, the officer observed a small object being thrown from the vehicle. After the stop, the officer addressed the driver regarding the tag light and questioned the presence of tree limbs. While speaking with the occupants, the officer noticed the odor of hemp/cannabis and observed nervous behavior from the front passenger. Consent was given to search the vehicle.
When asked to exit, the front passenger declined a personal search but complied with moving to the front of the vehicle. The officer then observed the individual remove and attempt to conceal a plastic bag. When questioned, the individual did not respond. The officer instructed them to place the item on the ground. Upon inspection, the bag contained a white crystal substance consistent with an illegal substance.
The individual was detained and read Miranda rights, which they acknowledged and waived. They confirmed the substance was an illegal substance. A further search revealed a plastic straw, which the individual admitted was used to ingest the substance. A nearby search for the previously discarded object was unsuccessful.
The back passenger was cited for an open container of alcohol found in the vehicle. All evidence was collected according to FWC policy and submitted to the Carrabelle evidence facility. The substance will be submitted to FDLE for testing. The individual was transported to the Franklin County Jail without incident.
