Benjamin Cooke's most famous canon consists of one melody played at different speeds and in different ranges. It won a prize from the Noblemen and Gentlemen's Round and Catch Club of London in 1775. An augmentation canon is related to a prolation canon: the melody is altered by being interpreted at different rates of speed.

This explanation leaves out the matter of the canon's clever inversion technique which is to be covered in a future video addressing double counterpoint.

Benjamin Cooke (1734-1793) earned doctoral degrees from both Cambridge and Oxford, was Organist at Westminster Abbey and St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and was conductor of the Academy of Ancient Music.

A Fourteenth Collection of Catches Canons and Glees for three four and five Voices most humbly inscribed to the Noblemen and Gentlemen of the Catch Club at the Thatch'd House Tavern, St. James's by their much oliged and devoted Servant Thomas Warren. London, Printed by Longman and Brodrip No. 26 Cheapside and No.13 Hay Market. ca. 1775"
