Take a self guided island tour of Gozo Malta with me and get a true taste of island life on the Maltese Archipelago. My solo road trip around Malta is getting better every day and I’ve been really excited to explore Gozo by car - so this is my chance, a grand one-day Gozo solo trip to see as much of the island as I possibly can! With limited time I decided to see as much as possible so let’s see how much ground I can cover in a day.

My Gozo Malta vlog takes me to the site of the now destroyed Azure Window and on a wild chase to catch a glimpse of a less famous alternative window close by. I stopped by the Inland Sea dive site, a scenic valley called Wied il-Għasri, a beautiful roman catholic basilica & the Ggantija Temples - a historical Heritage Malta site & one of the oldest buildings in the world. From there I drove up a steep hill to Calypso Cave & then down to a windy Ramla Bay where I relaxed in the late afternoon sun. It had been a long day but an incredible experience.

As I only had one day in Gozo I’m calling it the ultimate Gozo solo trip, an adventure like no other full of road trip ideas in Malta. Catching the ferry across is fairly straightforward (even with a car… in the dark!) but there is so much to see and do on the island it’s probably best to leave at least a couple of days. As said I only had one day to organise my own tour of Gozo so here’s a little more information on what I did.

It made sense to do things in order of location so I started at the most westerly place and worked my way around in a clockwise direction. I got up early and resisted the temptation for an early morning swim. I arrived at the site of the former Azure Window by about 9am. Most people came to see the window so it really hit tourism in this area hard when it collapsed into the sea back in 2017. Still, it’s interesting to see where it once stood and there are a few other things to do within walking distance including the Dwejra Tower, Fungus Rock, some incredible rock formations on the coastline called the Blue Hole and the amazing Inland Sea dive site.

I then jumped back into the car and headed to a place called Wied Il-Mielaħ - which is now Gozo’s only window rock formation. It’s an alternative to the Azure Window and comes with a rocky stairway leading down to a viewpoint. The wind was incredibly strong on this side of the island and it was almost hypnotic watching the sea hit the rocks below - the ocean really did look alive! A short drive later and I was at another scenic viewpoint, this time the Wied il-Għasri gorge snaking inland and providing a glorious swimming and snorkelling area in calmer weather.

My self-guided island tour of Gozo continued with a scenic ocean drive along by the salt pans and onto one of the most historic places in the entire country - the Ġgantija Temples, some of the oldest megaliths known to humanity. The temples were built from large stones around 5,500 years ago and predate the Pyramids in Egypt and Stonehenge in the UK. Heritage Malta looks after the site and does a great job of protecting the temples and allowing visitors to see them in a controlled way. This is a piece of history that I did not want to miss.

Finally the travel vlog takes me to Calypso Cave, which is a place possibly written about in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey - one of the oldest works of literature in existence. From there it was all downhill - literally. I headed down to Ramla Bay and took a well earned rest on the stunning red and orange sands of the beach. It was the perfect way to end the day!
