Why I Don’t Teach From 'The Classics' (And What I Teach Instead) (Shannan Speaks)

In this clip from my speaking engagement at Pasadena Art Center, I share why I’ve moved away from teaching screenplay structure using "the classics." Too often, the so-called "classics" are rooted in racism and erasure, making students from underrepresented communities feel othered in an industry where they are already the minority.

Instead, I teach using diverse, contemporary films—the ones my students and I grew up on. Representation matters, and it’s important for students to see that the films they know and love are just as valid for teaching screenplay structure. It’s also why I started the Plot Breakdown Playlist on this YouTube page, where I break down the structure of Black films that shaped my love for storytelling. These are my classics.

The world will have you believe that you can’t learn screenwriting from Black films, but I’m here to tell you that’s not true. I debunk that myth with ease.
