We are in Ouidah. Ouidah is a city in southern Benin, in West Africa. It’s known for its role in the 17th- to 19th-century Atlantic slave trade. The video shows the slave route, a track down which slaves were taken to the ships, is lined with monuments and leads to the Gate of No Return, an memorial arch on the waterfront. The fort was built by Portuguese where slaves were brought in and sold to their masters and shipped to Portuguese colony in Brazil and the rest of Americas. The yard behind the soldiers barracks is where slaves were kept before walking down in chains to the Gate of No Return. They were told to forget their names, religion and past and were given new names, converted into Christianity and became slaves in New World. It was really painful for me to walk this passage and imagine what they had to go through to face their dark fate. But it’s in the past and future is with Africa
