This exercise, known as 'Exercise Cope India 2023', marks the first time B1 heavy bomber jets from the US Air Force will participate with the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The exercise is taking place amid increasing military aggression from China in the Indo-Pacific region.
This joint military exercise demonstrates the robust defense cooperation between the US and India, as the US aims to replace Russia as India's primary defense supplier.
The US and Indian air forces are closely monitoring China's military advancements and modernizations, remaining vigilant about the regional security scenario.
The US's deployment of its top warplanes in India is not solely a message to China, but also highlights joint operability as a necessity between India and the US.
The US is trying to court India by promoting its military equipment as a substitute for Russian defense products, aiming to become New Delhi’s foremost defense ally.
India is slowly diversifying its defense imports, focusing on sourcing equipment from the US.
The Indian Air Force is considering the acquisition of a cruise missile carrier and could potentially lease or acquire a squadron of B-1B bombers for around $1 billion.
India and the US have all necessary agreements in place for the sale/lease of the bombers, making it easier for India to acquire the B-1B bombers if it decides to do so.

While India's Sukhoi Su-30MKI and other fighter jets do provide some level of bombing and long-range strike capabilities, acquiring strategic bombers like the B-1B would offer several additional benefits:

Payload capacity: Strategic bombers like the B-1B have a much larger payload capacity compared to multi-role fighter jets like the Su-30MKI. This allows them to carry more weapons and deliver a greater volume of firepower during a single mission, significantly increasing their destructive potential.
